The centre for asset studies is a think tank considering socio-economic impact of infrastructure. We are a not for profit organisation and do not engage in paid consulting work.

Combining Engineering, Asset Management and Economics we hope to identify opportunities to make tangible improvements in how physical assets can serve communities.

Defining Engineering

Engineering is the use of logic and science to solve practical problems within society. Many of our volunteers have a background in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Where engineering is about solving specific problems, we endeavour to explore the factors that put problems into context, and as a think tank, we might suggest more than one way of creating a solution.

Defining asset management

Asset management considers the overall system by which physical assets are looked after over their whole life cycle. The breadth of this discipline is well defined in the asset management landscape.

We consider factors directly related to the assets such as: requirements elicitation, design, build, operation, maintenance, renewal, replacement, demolition, change of use, specific asset risk management.

We also consider factors related to the organisations who own, look after or are otherwise affected by the assets such as: risk management, information management, financial management, stakeholder engagement.

Defining socio-economic impact

This is about how things are felt or experienced by humans. In economic terms we can explore this through the prism of exchanging value between parties. In social terms we can explore this in terms of quality of life, work life, health.
